The aim of our project was to create a\u00a0<strong>video game<\/strong>, which can successfully\u00a0<strong>replace a test like that<\/strong>, by evaluating the player\u2019s choices and playing style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>After a shipwreck you find yourself stranded on a&nbsp;<strong>small tropical island<\/strong>. Luckily, the island isn\u2019t entirely deserted as you find a local inhabitant willing to help you. They would like to bring you to the main island, as there is a ship which might&nbsp;<strong>bring you home<\/strong>. But without any money, paying for the fare won\u2019t be possible. Luckily though, the Captain offered you a free ride in return for some&nbsp;<strong>help around the island<\/strong>. So go and see what the island inhabitants have in store for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OCEAN includes many of the&nbsp;<strong>classic features found in most RPGs<\/strong>. You can talk to a variety of NPCs, make your own dialog choices, complete different quests, collect items, walk around exploring the island or quickly find your way by taking a look at the map. It also features the&nbsp;<strong>well-known RPG controls<\/strong>&nbsp;that should immediately be familiar to a lot of players.<br>If none of these things sound familiar to you though, no need to worry! This theory posits that the human personality can be measured and described as a combination of 5 key factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>O<\/strong>penness<\/em>: acceptance to new ideas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>C<\/strong>onscientiousness<\/em>: self control, act dutifully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>E<\/strong>xtroversion<\/em>: comfortableness around people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>A<\/strong>greeableness<\/em>: general concern for social harmony<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em><strong>N<\/strong>euroticism<\/em>: tendency to experience negative emotions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The questionnaire contains a variety of questions, each relating to one of these traits. Depending on the person\u2019s answer, the score for that factor goes up or down.<br>At the end, the scores represent&nbsp;<strong>how strongly pronounced each characteristic is<\/strong>&nbsp;in that specific person. However, a low or high score does not equal a worse or better person. The combination of these levels simply determine the&nbsp;<strong>general composition of the individual\u2019s personality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"in-game-evaluation\">In-Game Evaluation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To determine the players personality through a game, we are&nbsp;<strong>evaluating the player\u2019s choices and playing-style<\/strong>. For that, we designed quests and dialog options&nbsp;<strong>based on the survey questions<\/strong>.<br>For example, to convert the question \u201cI have a soft heart\u201d, we created a scenario in which the player encounters a homeless person. Now, they can choose if they\u2019d rather help or ignore him.<br>Depending on the decision, we are adding to or subtracting from the score for that according trait. That way, we can use the&nbsp;<strong>same calculation the survey uses<\/strong>&nbsp;to evaluate the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"491\" src=\"https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14-1024x491.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14-1024x491.png 1024w, https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14-768x368.png 768w, https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14-1536x736.png 1536w, https:\/\/fki.htw-berlin.de\/creative-media\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/11\/image-14.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"questionnaire\">Questionnaire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To check how well our game can imitate the classical test format, we also gave the players a regular&nbsp;<strong>personality questionnaire<\/strong>, using the questions from the german version of the&nbsp;<strong>IPIP-Test<\/strong>&nbsp;from Fritz Ostendorf.<br>To prevent our data being falsified by any influence the questionnaire might have on playing our game (or the game on answering the questionnaire) we decided to implement a 50\/50 chance of getting the test either&nbsp;<strong>before or after the game<\/strong>.
